The Song of Roving Rascals

In a glen of distant woodland,
On a branch above the river,
Stood a band of roving rascals,
Children of th peaceful forest.

Tall around them stood the maples,
Many-colored in the autumn,
Thick and silent by the river,
Halfway hiding roving rascals.

From their forest home they wandered
With the first faint hint of moonrise
Toward their curious adventures,
Brave the hearts of these young bandits.

At the meadows' shadowed edges,
Mock ferocious hae they battled,
Rough and tumble in the brambles
Pouncing one upon the other.

Raging playful in the evening,
Fearless of their prey they hunted
Through the thickets by the river
Tracking down the savage crawdad!

Climbing high among the branches,
Short they stop in sheer amazement
At the sight of the canoeist
Drifting silent with the current.

Five masked face in the moonlight,
Five black noses twitch alertly,
Ten black eyes observe intently,
Ten ears rise in apprehension.

With the movement of the paddle,
With its sound upon the water,
Comes a rustle in the branches,
Comes a scurry in the moonlight.

Quick they turn in mad confusion,
Frightful of the water monster,
Scrambling for their den, they flounder,
Roving rascals of adventure.
