The artist
After graduating from the Paier School of Art in 1975, Don Maitz received many awards and worldwide recognition for his imaginative artwork.
His paintings have given new life to the golden age of piracy. He was commissioned by the Seagram company to illustrate product labels for their Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum, a task that earned him the nickname of the "rum artist".
One of his swashbuckling images earned him a certificate of merit from New York's Society of Illustrators. Many exhibitions have followed including the British Museum of American Art and "Ahoy Maitz" a one-man exhibition at the Key West Museum of Art & History.
The painting
Three hundred years ago there lived Samuel Bellamy, a poor sailor.
Sam fell in love with Maria Hallett who lived in Eastham, Massachusetts, but Maria's parents thought that Sam wasn't goood enough for their daughter, and so he went to sea to seek his fortune.
His plan was to search shipwrecks for treasure. This proved a fruitless task, so Bellamy and his crew turned their attention to raiding ships. In one year alone they plundered more than fifty vessels in the Caribbean and Atlantic.
In February 1717, Black Sam Bellamy, as he was then known, and his "gentleman of fortune", came upon the Whydah a three-masted English slave ship carrying some £20,000 in gold and silver.
Such a fortune was more than enough to win the hand of Maria Hallett and Bellamy and his men turned for home. But fate dealt a cruel blow when in April 1717, his pirate fleet was struck by a violent storm and his ship lost and all but two of the crew perished.

Освободите себя от надежды, что море когда-нибудь успокоится. Мы должны научиться плыть при сильном ветре.
